Royal Can Bounce Back: Wildcats Show Plenty of Promise

ROYAL PALM BEACH, Fla. (By Andres)— One heartbreaking loss doesn’t define a season.

Royal Palm Coach responds, “Last night was a hard one. Losing at the very last second hurts, especially getting beat on a 75-yard Hail Mary with only 6 seconds left. But football is about how you respond. No time to hang our heads. We have to learn from it, regroup, and get ready for next week.”

Despite falling to Pahokee in dramatic fashion, Royal Palm Beach showed enough talent, toughness, and potential to suggest that the Wildcats can bounce back—and possibly put together an even stronger season than last year’s 7-5 campaign.

Royal Palm went toe-to-toe with a talented Pahokee team and carried momentum at different points throughout the game. While the final result did not go the Wildcats’ way, there were plenty of positives to build on.

A Strong Foundation

Royal Palm has a talented foundation, beginning with two explosive offensive playmakers: 2027 running back Demetrius Rolle and Class of 2028 wide receiver Demetrius Gibson.

Gibson has already established himself as one of Royal Palm’s biggest offensive weapons. As a sophomore, he recorded 800 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, improving on an impressive freshman season in which he totaled 725 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. Gibson also showed his versatility defensively as a freshman, recording four interceptions. That playmaking ability showed up again against Pahokee.

Quarterback Tashaad Brown connected with Gibson for a 25-yard touchdown, giving Royal Palm a much-needed spark. Brown throw to Gibson near the sideline on the key play, and Gibson broke the initial tackle before finding the end zone to tie the game.

Rolle is an Elite Playmaker

He later delivered one of Royal Palm’s biggest plays of the night with an electrifying 59-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Brown Gives Royal Palm Another Weapon

Brown may be a new name to many people following Royal Palm, but that may not be the case for long.

The Class of 2027 athlete is listed at 5-foot-10 and add dual-threat ability to the quarterback position. He arrived from Rhode Island, where he experienced tremendous success, including a 28-1 record as a junior.

Against Pahokee, Brown showed flashes of what he can bring to the Wildcats’ offense. Royal Palm established its running game and, during the second quarter, repeatedly attacked on the ground before increasing the tempo with its hurry-up offense. The pressure even contributed to Pahokee being caught with too many players on the field.

The Wildcats went into halftime tied 7-7. Pahokee had started the game with momentum, but Royal Palm weathered the early surge and entered the second half believing it could win.

Defense Made Its Presence Felt

Royal Palm’s defense also created opportunities throughout the night. The Wildcats came up with several important stops against Pahokee’s Wildcat formation, including a fumble recovery by Darryl Linder near the 10-yard line.

The defense repeatedly found itself dealing with difficult situations but continued fighting and giving the offense opportunities. Royal Palm also has several defensive players capable of making an impact this season, including Class of 2027 defensive tackle/center Derrick Patterson and defensive back Samari Curry. Patterson has earned a reputation for playing much bigger than his size. Coach Curry said Patterson has been “outperforming bigger, taller competition since his freshman year,” whether on the football field or in weightlifting. “Straight beast,” Coach Curry said. “The kid is a BALLER. Ask any opposing coach how they have to double him.”

Samari Curry is another player to watch. After missing nearly all of last season before returning for the playoff game, the cornerback/safety immediately announced his comeback during the spring by recording an interception. Those players give Royal Palm a defensive core capable of creating problems for opposing offenses.

A Battle Until the End

The second half turned into a physical battle. Pahokee regained momentum with its Wildcat package and eventually kicked a field goal to make the score 14-10. Both teams dealt with players cramping as the game became increasingly physical.

Royal Palm continued possessing the football, moving the chains and generating opportunities. The Wildcats had chances to change the outcome, including a possession in which a long field-goal attempt was a possibility before Royal Palm instead elected to attack through the air.

Late in the game, the Wildcats were still battling.

Ultimately, Pahokee produced the miraculous game-winning play that will be remembered for a long time. But Royal Palm’s performance before that final sequence should not be overlooked. The Wildcats had pushed a highly regarded Pahokee team to the limit.

Don’t Count Royal Out

Pahokee entered the matchup receiving strong recognition across local-area polls, appearing as high as No. 2 in one ranking and inside the Top 10 in several others.

Royal Palm showed it belongs in that conversation, too. A close loss against a talented opponent can reveal as much about a team as a victory. Royal Palm demonstrated explosive playmaking ability, a physical running game, defensive toughness and a quarterback with intriguing potential.

There is also stability within the program. Royal Palm’s head coach is now in his third year with the Wildcats after previously experiencing significant success coaching youth football. The program finished 7-5 last season, and there is enough talent on this roster to believe the Wildcats can build on that mark.

Royal Palm’s scheduled game against Archbishop McCarthy was affected by weather and rescheduled, and the Wildcats will now turn their attention toward Martin County.

The loss to Pahokee hurt—especially considering how close Royal Palm was to walking away with the victory. But the season is far from over. With Rolle, Gibson, Brown, Patterson, Curry and several other talented players leading the way, Royal Palm has the pieces to respond.

Don’t count the Wildcats out. Royal can bounce back.
