By Samuel: West Boca entered its matchup against American Heritage looking to prove it could deliver against one of South Florida’s powerhouse programs. Behind another strong performance from quarterback Trey Moran, a physical second-half rushing attack and a defense that produced timely turnovers, the Bulls answered the call with an impressive 24-7 victory at American Heritage.

West Boca head coach Dylan Potts made it clear afterward just how much confidence he has in his quarterback.

“We can beat anyone in the country with QB #1 (Trey Moran). That kid is special. Everything starts with him. He is the heart and soul of our offense. He can win the game through the air and with his legs.”

Moran Sets the Tone

Both offenses went three-and-out on their opening possessions, but once West Boca found its rhythm, Moran began taking control.

The standout quarterback delivered the first big strike of the night when he connected with Lorontae Davis for a 50-yard touchdown, giving the Bulls the early momentum.

Moran later found Billy Clancy for his second touchdown pass of the game. The score was especially meaningful for Clancy, who was returning after being injured last season. Clancy made his presence felt throughout the opening half, hauling in three big receptions and providing Moran with another reliable target.

West Boca carried a 14-0 lead into halftime, with Moran once again showing why he continues to establish himself as one of the elite quarterbacks in the nation.

After the game, Moran credited Potts for helping him continue to develop.

“Coach Potts is the best coach ever,” Moran said.

West Boca Turns to the Ground Game

West Boca did most of its damage through the air in the first half, but the Bulls showed another dimension after halftime. Terriel Harmon (Wally) and West Boca’s group of running backs were much more effective on the ground than they had been the previous week. Harmon also contributed with a nice reception as the Bulls found different ways to move the football.

One of West Boca’s most important possessions came when the Bulls leaned on their running game and drained approximately seven minutes off the clock. Controlling the football and shortening the game was a major goal for West Boca, and the long drive demonstrated the offense’s ability to win with more than Moran’s arm. The Bulls did leave points on the field. West Boca had an opportunity to potentially stretch the lead to 28-0 after getting inside the Heritage 20-yard line during the 1st half but was unable to capitalize. Rasheed Lamar also provided a spark on special teams with a huge kickoff return to midfield.

Defense Creates Turnovers

Despite the departure of Loia Valade, West Boca defense did not miss a beat. While Moran and the offense will receive plenty of attention, West Boca’s defense played a major role in the victory. Jamar Thompson (aka 40) delivered pressure with a key quarterback hit, while Delorean Airall Jr. came away with an interception. Then, in the fourth quarter, Max Reid made one of the defensive plays of the night. Reid tracked the quarterback’s eyes, anticipated the throw and stepped in for another West Boca interception.

Those takeaways helped the Bulls keep American Heritage from generating consistent offensive momentum. West Boca will still look to clean up its penalties. The Bulls were penalized for approximately 200 yards the previous week and cut that number to around 100 yards against Heritage. Reducing personal fouls, particularly after defensive takeaways, remains an important point of emphasis moving forward.

Heritage Shows Fight

American Heritage finally broke through in the third quarter when Tremaine scored on a 5-yard touchdown run, cutting into West Boca’s lead.

Heritage entered the matchup without having played a preseason game, and according to the program, several starters were unavailable.

Quarterback Neimann Lawrence is another player to watch as the season progresses. The talented quarterback is adjusting to a new team, but his ability gives Heritage plenty of reason for optimism as he becomes more comfortable in the offense.

On this night, however, West Boca was simply too much.

Final: West Boca 24, American Heritage 7
